No April Fools: Wright to team up with Pirates. Sort of. |

This isn’t an April Fool’s joke. I swear.
David Wright, the NY Mets third baseman, announced he will be working with the Pirates... Pirate brands, that is. While the timing is sure to catch more than a few baseball fans off-guard, the collaboration between the popular Met and Pirate Brands may prove to be a genuine hit. The Sea Cliff (NY)-based company produces all-natural, trans fat and gluten free snacks that include Pirate’s Booty, Potato Flyers, Smart Puffs and Tings. The company, which was founded in 1987, believes that taste and fun should not have to be ‘snackrificed’ for health. “I first discovered Pirate’s Booty on one of my visits to Energy Kitchen in New York City,” Wright said in a press release distributed by M. Booth & Associates. “Pirate’s Booty Aged White Cheddar was the first flavor I tried, and I was instantly hooked. Then, I read the nutritional label, and it was a no-brainer from there.” The marketing firm will also work in conjunction with Wright’s Foundation to support a healthy development in New York-area children, as well as those in his hometown of Norfolk, VA. The Mets would not immediately comment on Wright’s newfound partnership, though manager Jerry Manuel did breathe a sigh of relief upon hearing that Wright, a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, will be available for the Opening Day contest against the Florida Marlins. |

ARTICLE: David Wright and a PB & J Sandwich |

Last month the Mets held a media event in the clubhouse at Citi Field, and David Wright made the trip to speak about the coming season.
When it was over, he pulled out a zippered, soft-sided blue lunch box that he had brought with him from his Manhattan apartment, unzipped it and retrieved a peanut butter, honey and jelly sandwich that he had made a few hours earlier. By his own estimate, Wright eats these sandwiches 75 to 80 percent of the 365 days on the calendar, and he makes almost all of them himself. “He eats them nonstop, sometimes even for dinner,” Jeff Francoeur said. |

Click here to read. It's an excellent, insightful article. I'm glad to see that David has gotten stronger over the off-season to help rectify some of his power issues. Combined with the lowering of the wall at Citi Field, he should have a little more pop this season. Do I think he's going to crack forty homers this year? No. But I think he's going to have a decent shot at thirty. |

Mets Throwback: Art Shamsky |

As we focus on the future of the New York Mets, I wanted to take a moment to post about a man who was a part of a magical team in our history: the '69 Mets. This past season, I was able to attend the fortieth anniversary celebration at Citi Field and it brought absolute tears to my eyes. And one of the members of the team who was present at the ceremony was number 24, Art Shamsky.
In addition to re-opening his site with an entirely new layout, which features a slideshow banner, Art has made available some signed memorabilia. Of course, my favorite is a team photo from 1969, signed by 28 members of the roster, including Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, and Yogi Berra! However, I strongly recommend that you pickup a copy of his book, "The Magnificent Seasons," which covers the magical year in which the Mets, Jets, and Knicks all found their way to their first championships. It's a must read for all New York sports fans!

Mayor Pavia today announced that two City organizations, the Glenbrook Community Center and the Yerwood Center, will each be awarded $8,250 grants from New York Mets Superstar David Wright’s David Wright Foundation. “As a player in New York, I enjoy and appreciate our Stamford fan base and I think it’s important to contribute to a community that cares for its youth as much as Stamford does,” Wright stated. Last year, Wright, the consummate role model of a professional athlete, contributed to the Stamford Girls and Boys Club through The David Wright Foundation. “We chose these two organizations because they embody values that are important to pass on to young people; I’m proud to contribute to their efforts,” Wright said. “The Glenbrook Community Center and the Yerwood Center are pillars of the community and to attract the attention and support of an amazing guy like David Wright is a phenomenal tribute to these youth programs,” Mayor Michael Pavia said. “Most of us viewed things like baseball gloves and homework help as a natural right of childhood but a lot of kids don’t have such luxuries. And without ‘all stars of humanity’ like David Wright stepping up, these kids would be forced to do without,” Pavia said. “We’re just thrilled about these grants and we hope David Wright’s example inspires others to share their good fortune with kids like these,” Pavia said... |
