David Allen Wright was born December 20, 1982 in Norfolk, Virginia to
Rhon and Elisa Wright. Growing up in the suburban town of Chesapeake,
David was the oldest of four boys and resided just ten minutes away from
Harbor Park, the home of the Mets' AAA affiliate, the Norfolk Tides. As
a young boy, his athleticism and talent was always prevalent, but it wasn't
until he began attending Hickory High School that he began to garner attention
from Major League Baseball, becoming a prized prospect.
He was chosen as the 38th pick of the 2001 MLB Draft, as a supplemental
pick for the New York Mets, earned upon pitcher Mike Hampton's departure
for the Rockies. After winning the Sterling Award in his 2003 season with
the Class A St. Lucie Mets, he quickly ascended through AA Binghamton
and AAA Norfolk to the Major Leagues in 2004.
On July 21, 2004, David's childhood dream was realized as he debuted at
third base for the New York Mets, their 129th third baseman in the team's
history. Since his debut, the young man often nicknamed D-Wright, has
enjoyed immense success as a New York Met. He's received numerous awards,
including two turns as a National League All-Star, the 2007 Gold Glove
for third basemen, and a 2007 Silver Slugger Award.
But Wright's accomplishments extend far beyond the baseball diamond. His
work with charity organizations have solidified his sterling reputation
and role model status. His establishment of the David Wright Foundation,
a non-profit organization that provides financial support and raises awareness
for those in need, further cements that status. The foundation also targets
Multiple Sclerosis and children's causes, focusing on the New York City
and Norfolk, Virginia metropolitan areas.
Because of his work-ethic and devotion to those in need, David Wright
has quickly become an icon in New York and a young man that children and
young adults across the country can look up to in a world where many athletes
are only concerned about themselves.
